‘A Crucible,’ written by alumnus Brian Bauman, opens at The Wild Project in New York.
Playwright, producer and CalArts alumnus Brian Bauman (Theater MFA 06) re-appropriates the diaries of Marilyn Monroe and Andy Warhol, John Huston’s film The Misfits, and an Arthur Miller classic for his latest play, A Crucible, which opens tonight (Jan. 10) in New York City’s East Village.
A cast of nine plays 23 different roles in the “darkly comic” production that leads the audience through a whirlwind journey of classical, modern and post-modern theater. Bauman’s work explores the challenges and power of performance, focusing
on interaction among high school drama club members preparing to stage Miller’s The Crucible.
From the production notes:
Conflicts erupt when ideas about sexuality and contemporary performance begin to influence the young performers and their approach to the production. The young women and men, fueled by a passion for black magic and avant garde tropes, stage a coup to build a performance that addresses their lives.
The production includes two other CalArts alumni: lighting designer John Eckert (Theater MFA 06) and actor Robb Martinez (Theater MFA 07).
