This weekend (Feb. 7-9), Los Angeles-based animator and performer Miwa Matreyek (Film/Video MFA 07) returns to REDCAT with her latest work, This World Made Itself.
Matreyek, known for her brand of performance art, combines intricate projected animation with her own live shadow silhouettes, creating fantastical worlds.
Funded by a Creative Capital grant awarded to Matreyek last year, This World Made Itself leads the audience through the history of the earth, from its birth to today’s urban environment. The work premiered at the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, Ohio, in November and was performed at the New Frontier Program at Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, last month.
“The piece is at once semi-scientific (like flipping through a children’s encyclopedia), and emotional and dream-like rich in surrealism, metaphor, and fantasy,” Matreyek says on her website.
Also on the program is Matreyek’s Myth and Infrastructure, described by REDCAT as a work that “traverses seascapes, cityscapes and domestic spaces to conjure dreamlike scenes with nuanced layers of light and shadow.”
The performances feature the music of Flying Lotus (aka Steven Ellison), Mileece, Careful (aka Eric Lindley [Music/Writing and Integrated Media, MFA 08]), Anna Oxygen (Music MFA 08), and Caroline and Mirah.
The Friday and Saturday shows are sold out, but tickets are available for the Sunday performance.
