Leigh Wen Fine Art, an art gallery located in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City, opens a solo show this week by artist, animator, filmmaker and CalArts alumnus Jin Kyu Ahn (Film/Video BFA 08, MFA 11), with a reception on Oct. 16.
Ahn, who is a CalArts CAP animation instructor, says that his exhibition, Contained, is a “study of what has disappeared and remained.” The work with India ink on watercolor paper results from interactions between controlled (the artists physical and emotional state) and uncontrolled (such as temperature and humidity) elements.
He has exhibited work and screened his films extensively in U.S, Europe, Asia, South America and North America. Most recently, Flipping (2014) was screened at Athens International Film and Video Festival and the Intermediations Video Art and Experimental Video Festival (Colombia). Ahn is also affiliated with The Stuff, an arts collective comprised primarily of CalArts alumni.
The collective’s exhibition, Body of the Palace—a tribute to late CalArts teacher Michael E. Mitchell and the Palace classroom—is currently on view through Oct. 21 at Dax Gallery in Costa Mesa.
Contained, which is sponsored by the Korean Cultural Center in Los Angeles, is on view at Leigh Wen Fine Art through Nov. 1.
