On Wednesday (Nov. 5) at 8 pm, The Herb Alpert School of Music at CalArts presents a concert of works in honor of retiring clarinet faculty William Powell (Music MFA 79). The concert features performances by Powell, alumni, faculty and special guest artists, as well as the U.S. premiere of a work by Korean composer Sung-Yong Cheong.
The program includes both classical and contemporary works showcasing the clarinet. Powell will be joined by former piano faculty Bryan Pezzone to play sonatas for clarinet and piano by Johannes Brahms and Francis Poulenc, before moving on to Caravanes, for solo clarinet, by alumnus Cesar Mateus (Music MFA 86) and To Grasp is to Uncontrollably Drop, for clarinet, piano and Ableton Live by alumnus Joshua Carro (Music MFA 13). Cheong’s piece, Monolog, for clarinet, violin, viola, cello and piano, will be conducted by the composer himself—his first appearance in the United States. Violinist Stephanie Moorehouse (Music MFA 14), violist Marcus Pyle and faculty cellist Erika Duke-Kirkpatrick will perform alongside Powell.
Powell arrived at CalArts in 1977 as a student to earn his MFA in clarinet performance and later joined the faculty in 1985 as Director of the Performance Program in the School of Music. In 1993, Powell relocated to India on a Senior Research Grant from the J. William Fulbright Commission and went on to present concerts of American music throughout the subcontinent. He has premiered more than 200 compositions and performed in major concert venues throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia.
