Black Clock 19 Reading This Sunday in Los Angeles

Black Clock, CalArts’ semi-annual literary journal, recently published its 19th issue, featuring pieces by 27 writers. To celebrate the release of the latest edition, Black Clock editor and former School of Critical Studies faculty Steve Erickson hosts a launch party featuring readings from seven Black Clock 19 authors at Mandrake on Sunday (Nov. 9) at 4 pm in Los Angeles.

The free event will feature: Black Clock’s own senior editor and Critical Studies faculty Bruce Bauman, and production editor Anne-Marie Kinney (Critical Studies MFA 08), Robert Eisele, Lou Mathews, Joslyn Sklar (Critical Studies MFA 13), former Critical Studies faculty Janet Sternburg and Susan Straight.

Randy Newman once sang, “I’ll talk to strangers if I want to, ’cause I’m a stranger too.” Pondering whether the madness that drives families, friends and lovers apart is really greater than the madness that holds them together, Black Clock 19 is full of mad strangers: the one in the neighborhood in Susan Straight’s “Closing the Gate,” the one in the house in Janet Sternburg’s “White Matter,” the one bringing a message in Joseph McElroy’s “Plea.”

Black Clock is published in print ($17) and PDF ($3) formats by CalArts in association with the School of Critical Studies MFA Writing Program. Annual subscriptions are also available.
