This summer, CalArts Community Arts Partnership (CAP) went international—hosting students from Rio de Janeiro. Teenagers from Rio’s favelas joined with students from the city’s British School to attend CAP’s annual Summer Arts Program at Inner City Arts in downtown Los Angeles.
Both Americans and Brazilians are participating in a free two-week intensive program–ending today–that offered creative experimentation in the arts and the opportunity to deepen their cultural understanding as they learned about each other.
CAP is a 20-year pioneering public-private arts partnership that links with 43 partner organizations throughout L.A. County. And since its inception, CAP has trained more than 200,000 young artists, many from some of the city’s most diverse neighborhoods and opened pathways leading its students to college and careers in the arts. In the process, CAP has created a national model for arts education partnerships–and now at an international level.
