Korean Students Screen Winter Institute Motion Graphics Projects

This month, the Graphic Design Program and the Office of Global Initiatives at CalArts hosted the fourth Winter Institute in Motion Graphics, a four-week workshop for 20 visiting students from Hongik University in Seoul, South Korea. The students screen the fruits of their labor on Friday (Jan. 30) at 8 pm in the Bijou Auditorium.

Hongik students applied motion graphics techniques and concepts from the workshop to their individual projects, each set to a different track of music. Lead by CalArts Graphic Design Program Co-Director Michael Worthington (Art MFA 95), four guest instructors taught a different section per week: alumni Edwin Alvarenga (Art MFA 14) and Daryn Wakasa (Art MFA 10)—who taught courses in the program last year—and artists David Lewandowski and Carsten Becker. 

 “The workshop involves the entire process (ideation through finished piece, with all of the in-between stages) in a single short, intense project,” says Worthington in an email.

The third and fourth-year undergraduates enrolled in Visual Communications Design and Animation programs at Hongik, arrived in Southern California on Jan. 5. In addition to the coursework, students have had site visits to Mirada Studios, DreamWorks Animation and are scheduled to visit Blizzard Studios in Los Angeles on Thursday (Jan. 29). During their month-long stay, they were also encouraged to meet CalArts students and faculty and to attend art shows and concerts to immerse themselves in the full CalArts experience.
