50 Books | 50 Covers Competition Announces Winners

50 Books | 50 Covers is the longest-running design competition in the U.S., established by the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) in 1923 and organized by the design writing and culture website Design Observer since 2011. Earlier this month, judges Michael Bierut and Jessica Helfand—Design Observer founders—along with author and designer Peter Mendelsund, announced the winners of the 2014 competition, with several CalArtians earning accolades.

Among the “50 Books” category (which honors both the cover and internal page designs), the judges selected:

  • The Made in L.A. 2014 exhibition catalog, written by CalArts School of Art faculty Michael Ned Holte and Hammer Museum Chief Curator Connie Butler. The book was designed by CalArts alumnae Kimberly Varella (Art MFA 99) and Tanya Rubbak (Art MFA 07 ).
  • Earthquakes, Mudslides, Fires & Riots: California and Graphic Design 1936-1986 by CalArts faculty Louise Sandhaus (Art MFA 94) with essays by Denise Gonzales Crisp (Art MFA 96) and fellow CalArts Graphic Design faculty Lorraine Wild and Michael Worthington (Art MFA 95). The book was designed by Sandhaus with Kat Catmur (Art MFA 14), Jens Gehlhaar (Art MFA 97), Thomas Kracauer (Art MFA 11), Kaoru Matsushita (Art BFA 14), Christopher Morabito (Art MFA 10), Derrick Schultz, Hayden Smith (Art MFA 15) and Ben Woodlock (Art MFA 13).
