CalArts’ Alumni Win Emmy Awards

After the conclusion of the two-part Emmys festivities (as the Creative Arts Emmys were held on Sept. 12 and the 67th Annual Emmy Awards were broadcast on Sunday night) several CalArtians walked away with new trophies for their cases:

  • Robert Barnhart (Theater BFA 87) won an Emmy for Outstanding Lighting Design | Lighting Direction For A Variety Special for his work on the Super Bowl XLIX Halftime Show Starring Katy Perry.
  • Daniel Boland (Theater BFA 95) and Johnny Bradley (Theater BFA 07) won Emmys for Outstanding Lighting Design | Lighting Direction For A Variety Series for The Voice’s “Episode 818A.”
  • Patrick McHale (Film/Video BFA 06) and Amalia Levari won Emmys for Outstanding Animation Program for Over the Garden Wall, which McHale created.
  • Alonso Ramirez Ramos (Film/Video BFA 10), won a Best Individual Achievement Emmy Award for his storyboard work on Gravity Falls.
  • JJ Villard (Film/Video BFA 04) won a Best Individual Achievement Emmy Award for his character design on King Star King on Adult Swim.
  • Pendleton Ward (Film/Video BFA 05) and team won an Emmy for Outstanding Short-Format Animated Program for Adventure Time’s episode “Jake The Brick.”

During Sunday night’s telecast, Amazon’s Transparent had a big night, winning awards for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series (Bradley Whitford); Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series for the “Best New Girl” episode (Jill Soloway); and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series (Jeffrey Tambor). In his moving speech, Tambor gave thanks to his “teachers” for his groundbreaking role as transgender Maura Pfefferman—including two CalArts alumni Rhys Ernst, pictured below, and Zackary Drucker, who work as associate producers on Transparent.
