The 43rd Annual Annie Awards honored achievements in film and television animation on Saturday night at UCLA’s Royce Hall, with several CalArtians earning the coveted “Annies.” The night’s big winner was Pete Docter (Film/Video BFA 90), who wrote and directed Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out, with Ronnie del Carmen. Doctor and del Carmen won for Directing for an Animated Feature Production, Writing for an Animated Feature Production and Best Animated Feature.
Other CalArts alumni winners include:
- Ralph Eggleston (Film/Video 86) for Outstanding Achievement, Production Design in an Animated Feature Production for Inside Out;
- Albert Lozano (Film/Video BFA 94) for Character Design in an Animated Feature Production for Inside Out;
- Matt Braly (Film/Video BFA 10) for Outstanding Achievement, Directing in an Animated TV/Broadcast Production for Gravity Falls’ episode, “Northwest Mansion Mystery”;
- Alonso Ramirez Ramos (Film/Video BFA 10) for Outstanding Achievement, Storyboarding in an Animated TV/Broadcast Production for Disney Mickey Mouse’s episode “¡Feliz Cumpleaños!”;
- Jason Carpenter (Film/Video MFA 06) headed a team of several CalArts artists who animated sequences in He Named Me Malala, which won for Best Animated Special Production; and
- Craig McCracken (Film/Video 92)’s Wander Over Yonder won Best Animated Television/Broadcast Production For Children for the episode, “The Breakfast.”
During the Saturday night’s ceremony, Docter and Inside Out producer Jonas Rivera presented a Winsor McCay Award to the late Joe Ranft (Film/Video 80) for his career contributions to the art of animation. In his moving introduction, Docter says he was lucky enough to have Ranft as his story teacher at CalArts, as well as a friend and mentor.
