A number of CalArts faculty and alumni are screening their works at the 54th annual Ann Arbor Film Festival (AAFF), which begins today (March 15) and runs through Sunday (March 20) in Ann Arbor, Mich. The festival features more than 200 films, videos and live performances, including more than 30 world, North American or U.S. premieres.
Two faculty members—Rebecca Baron from the School of Film/Video and Lewis Klahr from the School of Theater—have special presentations of their films. Baron, a juror at this year’s festival, is known for lyrical essay films that focus on the construction of history. She screens four of her short films [Okay bye-bye (1998, 38 mins.); The Ideal of North (1995, 14 mins.); Lossless #3 w/Doug Goodwin (2008, 10 mins.) and Detour de Force (2014, 29 mins.)] during her Juror Presentation on Friday at 1 pm.
Klahr’s latest essay film Sixty Six (2002-15, 90 mins.) screens at 1:15 pm on March 20. Mining his 30-year archive of materials, Klahr’s cinematic anthology includes 12 discrete digital films. The much-lauded work, which had its world premiere in December at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, prompted Manohla Dargis of The New York Times to write: “Sixty Six is one of the finest cinematic achievements of the year and a terrific introduction to Mr. Klahr’s work.”

Alumna Karissa Hahn (Film/Video BFA 14) has two films at the festival: REGAL (2015, 2 mins.) has its U.S. premiere and screens in competition as part of the opening night program; and her short (l) Frame, with faculty member Andrew Kim (Film/Video MFA 13), is also in competition.
