Above: Composer and alumnus Todd Lerew.
On Sept. 2 at Art Share L.A., alumnus Todd Lerew (Music MFA 14) and CalArts ensemble The Formalist Quartet perform Erik Ulman’s String Quartet No. 3, as well as Lerew’s Spherical Harmonics and Bowing to Pressure in the program, “WasteLAnd: U/L,” the second performance of the WasteLAnd concert series.
In 2014, Lerew won the American Composers Forum’s National Composition Contest, winning a cash prize and the chance for his winning piece to be played by New York-based percussion ensemble, So Percussion. Since then, Lerew has had his work performed at Experimental Music Yearbook Concert and has worked with L.A.-based artisanal beer company SoLArc Brewing, co-founded by alumnus Archie Carey (Music MFA 11), which matched experimental beers to Lerew’s music.
The Formalist Quartet includes Mark Menzies, faculty member of The Herb Alpert School of Music at CalArts, and alumni Andrew Tholl (Music MFA 08, DMA 12), Andrew McIntosh (Music MFA 08) and Ashley Walters (Music MFA 07). The quartet is “dedicated to the performance of adventurous repertoire focusing on contemporary pieces and world premiers as well as exploring a diverse spectrum of early music and the standard repertoire.”
Lerew and the members of The Formalist Quartet are part of the larger music collective, WasteLAnd, which evolved from the WasteLAnd concert series. The collective has performed English composer Brian Ferneyhough’s music at UC San Diego and CalArts and has recorded faculty Anne LeBaron’s piece A to Zythum.
WasteLAnd’s full list of shows in their current season is available on their website.
