Writer, curator and CalArts’ Program in Art Co-Director Michael Ned Holte is among the recipients of the 2016 Creative Capital and Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant. The grant program, which awards $15,000 to $50,000 to arts writers, is designed to support writing about contemporary art, as well as to create a broader audience for arts writing.
Holte is awarded for his book project, Too Small to Fail: Art and Microinstitutions in Los Angeles. More about the book from the website:
Too Small to Fail will be an embedded account of the present, the recent past, and the probable near future of Los Angeles art worlds. It will examine a number of small-scale ventures—microinstitutions—that have recently emerged to serve and engender important, if overlooked, artist constituencies. This book will consider self-styled museums such as The Museum of Public Fiction and the Los Angeles Museum of Art, the pirate radio station KCHUNG, and community-centered, artist-operated spaces which determinedly create opportunities for queer artists and artists of color frequently marginalized by the for-profit art market.
The Arts Writers Grant Program recognizes excellence in four categories: articles, blogs, books and short-form writing. See the complete list of awardees.
