CalArtians Mark Bradford and Sharon Lockhart in Conversation in Los Angeles

In an effort to make its art holdings more accessible to the public, The Broad, a contemporary art museum in Downtown Los Angeles, created The Un-Private Collection, an ongoing series of conversations with artists whose work is part of The Broad collection. The next Un-Private Collection talk takes place on Wednesday (Aug. 16) at the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles, and features CalArts alumnus Mark Bradford (Art BFA 95, MFA 97) and CalArts School of Art faculty Sharon Lockhart.

The artists will discuss their work in the American and Polish pavilions, respectively, at this year’s Venice Biennale, as well as the centrality of social activism in their artistic practices. The discussion will be led by curator, critic and art historian Katy Siegel.

From The Broad’s program notes:

Lockhart explores the human subjects of her artwork through workshops, film and photographs, and Bradford through the found materiality of his painting and activism. Through their respective practices, both seek to enrich the communities they engage in their processes.

The installation Oracle, which is currently on view at the museum, includes Bradford’s Across 110th St (2008) and Boreas (2007), and Lockhart’s Manioc Production: Elenilde Correa, Eliane Correa, Neide Correa, Mariana Correa, Denize Correa & Maria Correa, Santa Rita Community, River Aripuana, Brazil (1999).
