On Friday (Nov. 17), EXO//ENDO, an ensemble founded by CalArtians Andrea Young (Music DMA 14) and Braden Diotte (Music MFA 14), performs at REDCAT in downtown Los Angeles alongside Herb Alpert School of Music faculty and renowned saxophonist Ulrich Krieger. The performance marks the world premiere of Krieger’s mythological piece, Black Sun Rebirth. Inspired by the first book of Edda, a collection of Old Norse poems, Black Sun Rebirth is a sonic journey from the demise of the cosmos to a rebirth from the oceans composed as a combination of contemporary chamber music, ambient doom metal and micro-sound aesthetics.
EXO//ENDO’s Friday night concert also features a performance of Diotte’s General Manifest, an ode to the haunting sounds he experienced riding the rails in the American West for more than 20 years. On his website, Diotte adds that the philosophy infused in General Manifest, is “as personal as it is political, as anarchistic as it is patriotic, and as natural as it is spiritual.”
The ever-evolving ensemble currently features Young (voice, electronics); Krieger (saxophone); Diotte (electric bass guitar, synthesizer); Derek Stein (Music MFA 10) on cello; Sharon Chohi Kim (Music MFA 14) on voice and percussion, Michael Yr J Day on turntables, percussion, electronics; Jenica Anderson on percussion and Marina Hasselberg on cello.
EXO//ENDO’s determined mission is, “to further break what has already been broken, and to work exclusively with what remains.”
