The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awarded its Children’s Awards at a ceremony in London on Sunday, and two CalArtians took home top honors.
Taking home the award for Feature Film was The Little Prince (Netflix), directed by CalArts alumnus Mark Osborne (Film/Video BFA 92). The animated tale is a reimagining of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s beloved children’s book of the same name. The Little Prince tells the story of an aviator stranded in the Sahara Desert who meets a little boy he calls “the little prince.” Later in the book, the aviator learns that the Little Prince is a traveler from asteroid B-612.
Osborne accepted the honor in person and spoke of his film’s 28-year journey, when his wife gave him Saint-Exupéry’s book. In his speech, Osborne thanked the hundreds of artists who helped him create a “true tribute to the power of that beautiful, amazing book.”
SpongeBob SquarePants won the International category, with honors going to creator and CalArts alum Stephen Hillenburg (Film/Video MFA 92) along with Vincent Waller and Marc Ceccarelli. The longtime series first began airing on Nickelodeon in 1999, and this most recent award marks its third BAFTA Children’s Award.
