This month, CalArts Center for New Performance (CNP) leads a team of artists in Warsaw for a month-long interdisciplinary collaboration with Teatr Studio, one of Poland’s premier experimental theaters. Combining theater, visual arts, and contemporary music, the developmental residency will culminate in a CalArts Studio Festival June 22 through 24 on the Teatr Studio stages and at Plac Defilad, a public square in downtown Warsaw.
“The first step between Teatr Studio and CalArts Center for New Performance is natural,” says CNP Artistic Director and School of Theater dean Travis Preston. “CalArts’ experimental mission has real and direct connection to the interests of Teatr Studio and its new artistic director, Natalia Korczakowska. Seeking to activate the legacy of Józef Szajna, Natalia immediately recognized in CalArts and CNP a kindred spirit, a kind of California double. CNP artists coming to be in residence at Teatr Studio are all bringing works in progress. We hope that being in Warsaw can permeate and influence the work in ways that cannot be achieved in the familiar circumstances of our home.”
Preston brings an all-star team of artists to Teatr Studio, made up of CalArts alumni, faculty, and current students. Artists include writer and performer Marissa Chibas, choreographer Jessica Emmanuel (faculty/Dance/07), filmmaker Janie Geiser (faculty), composer and sound artist Chris Kallmyer (Music/09), filmmaker Lewis Klahr (faculty), performance artist Peter Mark (A/17), director Zoe Moore (faculty/D/11), writer and performer Daniel Passer (faculty), and video artist Keith Skretch (IMP/12). The mini-festival will present nine original works developed while in residence, four community engagement workshops, and three short films.
CNP Producing Director Megan E Carter (faculty) and CNP Associate Producer Sophie Blumberg (CPM/20) will produce the festival, which is organized in cooperation with the Adam Mickiewicz Institute.
