In 2012, curator, writer and CalArts alum Bradford Nordeen (Art BFA 05) founded Dirty Looks, a queer film series designed to bring communities together by activating diverse spaces across New York City. For the first time, Dirty Looks: On Location 2018 is happening in Los Angeles (and it’s already in full swing). The arts organization has programmed LGBTQ+ venues (past and present) with film, performance and music every night in July.
From Dirty Looks’ website:
On Location 2018 was organized by 13 local curators, artists and promoters, playing with venues and meeting places that defined queer life in Los Angeles: 31 spaces across the 31 days of July, charting a progression of culture(s) using one month’s time.
Ours is a distinct urban sprawl – there is no city that feels quite as diverse, vast or chaotic as L.A. We have also witnessed the erasure of many queer communal spaces, a byproduct of gentrification, apps and online culture or the AIDS crisis. Our festival celebrates thriving spaces while also paying homage to the lost lesbian bars, bookstores or significant storefronts from which political activism once erupted.
For July 30, Nordeen curates a queer-themed Wikipedia edit-a-thon with Stacey Allan, executive editor of East of Borneo—the online magazine of contemporary art in Los Angeles published by the CalArts School of Art. Allan, who has been leading Wikipedia workshops since 2013, will demonstrate how to edit and create Wikipedia entries that more accurately reflect LA’s LGBTQ places and histories. The event takes place at Cuties, a new, queer-owned and operated coffee bar in East Hollywood. RSVP for the event online.
