The Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery (LAMAG), located in Barnsdall Park in East Hollywood, holds an opening reception for its Juried Exhibition 2018 on Sunday (July 22). The show features works from more than 50 artists—current students and recent graduates—from Southern California’s leading MFA programs.
A number of CalArtians will show works at the exhibition, including Martina Crouch (Art MFA 16), Matthew Lax (Film/Video, Art MFA 16), Mariner Padwa (Art MFA 2017), peckingnets (Art MFA 17), Anna Luisa Petrisko, Jaklin Romine (Art MFA 17), Tamara Rosenblum (Art MFA 13) and Hannah Varamini (Art MFA 18).
All the artists were selected by a three-person jury: art critic Jonathan Griffin; Jamillah James, curator of the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; and Steven Nelson, professor of African and African American Art History at UCLA. The jurors focused on choosing emerging artists who are redefining the contemporary art scene of Los Angeles, building upon the artistic legacy of the exhibition, which first launched in 1953.
The opening reception of Juried Exhibition 2018 features a performance by Rebecca Bruno, the founder of HomeLA (“a performance project dedicated to dance process in private space”) with Samantha Mohr.
The works will be on view through Sept. 16.
