CalArts Weekend, a celebration of the Institute’s community and culture, kicks off tomorrow morning (Friday, Oct. 12). Parents, relatives, alumni and friends arrive on campus to experience a full slate of workshops, classes, art exhibitions and performances.
Friday’s festivities begin with a welcome luncheon with live music by CalArts Salsa Band, led by David Roitstein, director of the Jazz Program. In the afternoon, the School of Critical Studies is holding a panel discussion, and artist J. Cash-Cooper (Art MFA 12) gives an artist talk about his commissioned mural Black Magic, Blessed Children, which was recently installed outside CalArts’ Alumni Office.
In the evening, guests are invited to a party, DJ’d by L.A.-native electronic music producer Groundislava (Art 09), at CalArts’ legendary pool. Afterward, there are two performances to choose from: The Speakeasy Society’s play, The Kansas Collection: Chapter 1 or CalArts Open House Dance Concert. (Both are ticketed events.)
Saturday morning starts off with a featured alumni forum with animator Glen Keane (Film/Video BFA 74), who shares his personal journey of merging art and technology. The second forum is a talk with the artists of the aforementioned immersive entertainment company The Speakeasy Society, and the third forum features a performance and talk with the team behind Try/Step/Trip, a word/step dance musical in development through CalArts Center for New Performance.
FUNFEST, an afternoon carnival, takes place Saturday afternoon with an Oktoberfest biergarten, games, prizes, bingo and live music by Cilience and Abby & the Myth.
CalArts Weekend culminates with two performances: Machines and Strings, a world premiere concert at the Wild Beast curated by the Isaura String Quartet at 5:3o pm; and in case you missed it on Friday night, the Open House Dance Concert.
