Tomorrow night (Oct. 20), Border Bang 2, a sequel exhibition of original art works created and curated by animator and director Jorge R. Gutierrez (Film/Video MFA 00), opens at Coagula Curatorial in Los Angeles.
A follow-up to the artist’s 2016 debut solo show, Border Bang, at the Gregorio Escalante Gallery, Border Bang 2 re-emphasizes the pop-cultural crossover that’s specific to the Tijuana/U.S. border.
From the program:
Re-appropriating the bombardment of pop culture images is the border’s reaction to global issues and events. In cultural spaces marked by hybridity, viewers and consumers know not to glorify the political but rather to acknowledge its cultural impact through subversive presentation.
In an era where cultural appropriation policing has become a favored virtue signaling strategy, Gutierrez reminds us that artistic inspiration can come from anywhere and should be open to anyone.
The five other artists whose work Gutierrez curated for the exhibition include: Sandra Equihua, Gerald De Jesus, Robot Soda, Raul The Third and Alfredo Echeverria Ripstein.
The works from the exhibition are being published by Cernunnos in a hardcover Border Bang book. Gutierrez will be at Coagula Curatorial on Sunday (Oct. 21) from 2-5 pm for a book signing.
Originally from Mexico City, Gutierrez lives and works in Los Angeles. He directed the 2014 Golden Globe-nominated film The Book of Life from 20th Century Fox Animation, and created the Emmy Award-Winning animated Nikelodeon TV series El Tigre, The Adventures of Manny Rivera.
Border Bang 2 will remain on view through December 30. The gallery is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 1-6 pm to the public, free of charge, and by private viewing appointment for curators, press and art collectors.
