Sarah Reid Performs at a2ru National Conference Closing Event

On Saturday (Nov. 3), Sarah Reid, DMA/faculty in The Herb Alpert School of Music at CalArts, performs a solo set on trumpet and electronics in Human and the Machine, a concert presented by Moogfest in Athens, Georgia. Reid’s performance is part of the closing event for the 2018 Alliance for the Arts in Research Universities (a2ru) national conference at the University of Georgia. Other featured performers include R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe, Deantoni Parks, Lauren Sarah Hayes and Author & Punisher.

According to the program notes, the evening features musicians working with “new performance technologies and inventions, modular synth performances, spatial sound compositions and more–all exploring the relationship between human and machine.”

An experimental performer-composer, Reid specializes in modular synthesis and alternate forms of graphical notation for composition and improvisation for the trumpet. She is a co-developer of the Minimally Invasive Gesture Sensing Interface (MIGSI) for trumpet, which wirelessly captures performance data and provides real-time sonic and visual control for improvisation.

The a2ru conference champions the role of the arts and design at research universities. The conference’s 2018 theme, Arts Environments: Design, Resilience, and Sustainability, explores the relationship between creativity and the arts and their environments, through performance, design and engineering. Created in 2004, Moogfest is a tribute to electronic music pioneer Robert Moog, inventor of the revolutionary line of Moog synthesizers.
