This week (April 28-May 4), the first-year BFA students from the School of Art present Topping Topless Studios, the annual Foundation Show. The Art students are given their first opportunity to curate and showcase work from their Foundation class to the public. The show documents a year of learning and growth and serves as the culmination of students’ work.
The group exhibition occupies the Main Gallery as well as the L-Shape, Mint, Lime and A402 galleries.
In a phone interview with 24700, Veronika Gamaley (Art BFA 22), one of the student organizers, says audiences should expect they will be “topping” Topless Studios (the name of the BFA-1 Open Studios, held last semester). For Topless Studios, CalArts faculty and students were invited to BFA 1 workspaces to discuss artistic practices with the artists. Since then, the first-year students have been preparing artwork for the Foundation Show.
Topping Topless Studios centers on the theme of exploration; and in continuing with Foundation Show tradition, the works demonstrate creative diversity and innovation.
The opening reception takes place at 8:30 pm on May 2. Food and dog treats will be served at the Main Gallery, Mint and Lime galleries.
A number of related performances also take place on Thursday, May 2. The performance schedule includes:
