Created by composer, guitarist and CalArts faculty Michael Pisaro in 2005, the Dog Star Orchestra ensemble and its namesake summer concert series features experimental music by emerging composers, including a number of CalArts alums.
The two final concerts of Dog Star Orchestra 15 take place this weekend. On Friday, June 21, Sweet Pan on the Mountain features the Dog Star Steel Orchestra (Katie Eikam (Music MFA 19), Kevin Good (Music MFA 18), Chia-Ying Wu, Liam Mooney) who present new compositions for steel chamber ensemble by: Erika Bell (Music BFA 18), Carolyn Chen, John Eagle (Music MFA), Liam Mooney, Sepand Shahab and Stephanie Cheng Smith (Music MFA 11). On Saturday, June 22, outdoors at The Wild Beast at CalArts, the concert Civil Twilight features opening and closing works composed in reference to the sky positions on the night of the concert (June 22).
The program also includes three large ensemble compositions: to knowe the spryng of the dawenyng and the ende of the evenyng, the whiche ben called the two crepuscules by Ryan Seward; for 5+ performers Christine Burke; and pájaros cargando memorias by Sergio Cote Barco.
In recent years, Dog Star’s summer festival has significantly grown from a series of six concerts to 15, with upwards of 60 musicians participating as composers, performers and curators.
