On Tuesday, Oct. 15, Tim Burton’s (Film/Video 79) fine art exhibition Lost Vegas was unveiled at The Neon Museum in Las Vegas. The show marks the artist’s first North American show in nearly a decade.
Lost Vegas “celebrates Burton’s link to the “historical neon heritage” of Las Vegas, a city he often visited as a child and cites as an early artistic inspiration. The exhibition, which is presented by the Engelstad Foundation, runs until Saturday, Feb. 15, 2020.
“Vegas is very special, I’ve been coming here my whole life,” Burton told the Las Vegas Review-Journal in a recent interview. “Artistically, it’s very important to me in terms of illusion, perception, day and night, you know, all the things I equate to Las Vegas.”
The exhibition features more than 40 of Burton’s original works, over half of which are integrated into the museum space. The majority of the exhibition’s digital and sculptural works are never before seen and created specifically for the exhibition. Works include a 40-by-20 foot grid of neon signs overlooking the museum’s Boneyard, three life-sized aliens from Burton’s 1996 fantasy thriller Mars Attacks!, carousel ceiling projections and various models of his famous characters strategically placed throughout the museum.
Burton is an American film director, producer, artist, writer and animator renowned for his fantastical stories and gothic aesthetic. He is the recipient of a 2010 Annie Award, a 2006 BAFTA Award for Corpse Bride (2005), a 1991 Hugo Award for Edward Scissorhands (1990) and a 1990 Daytime Emmy for Beetlejuice (1989). Earlier this year, Burton was inducted into the Online Film & Television Association’s (OFTA) Hall of Fame.
