Classical music collective Wild Up presents darkness sounding, a new series running through Sunday, Jan. 19 at various Los Angeles-area locations.

Wild Up, founded by conductor and composer Christopher Rountree, promulgates “mindful music during the darkest days of the year” in its latest series. Darkness sounding celebrates the shortening of days in the winter season through contemplative concerts, talks and experiences, including sensory deprivation and four Satsangs (spiritual gatherings).

Taking place on Saturday, Dec. 21 is one of the series’ main events: Solstice Sounding | dusk to dawn. The 14-hour concert of “mindful, joyful and maybe melancholic” dronish music runs through the longest night of the year. Among its cast of performer-composers are numerous CalArtians: trombonist Matt Barbier (Music MFA 10), cellist Derek Stein (Music MFA 10), guitarist Chris Kallmyer (MFA Music 09), violinist Andrew Tholl (Music MFA 08, DMA 12), vocalist Kathryn Shuman (Music MFA 16) and saxophonist Marta Tiesenga (Music MFA 17). Guests are advised to bring blankets, sleeping bags and other warm items to combat cold, and are invited to stay and sleep overnight. Tickets are available here.
