CalArtians Present and Participate at Photo L.A. 2020

Photographers, photography enthusiasts and collectors alike convene at Photo L.A. 2020, which kicks off with an opening night preview on Thursday, Jan. 30, and runs Friday, Jan. 31 to Sunday, Feb. 2, at the historic Barker Hangar in Santa Monica. Proceeds from the opening night tickets support Venice Arts, an award-winning nonprofit organization providing educational programs in photography and film to low-income youths throughout Los Angeles.

Known as the West Coast’s longest-running international photographic art exposition, Photo L.A. marks its 28th edition with a roster of more than 65 local and international exhibitors, complete with lectures, panel discussions, special installations and docent tours. CalArts students, alumni and faculty are among the exhibitors and panelists presenting at the event.

Questioning the Protocols of Display | Friday, Jan. 31, 3 pm

Writer Travis Diehl (Art MFA 10) is among the panelists in this discussion about the aesthetic demand for context, and the chicken-or-egg argument about artistic practices and places for display—which necessitates which? Individuals within and outside of major institutions ponder methods and possible future exhibition strategies.

Reconsidering the Postmodern Canon | Saturday, Feb. 1, 11 am
Art historian Jeanne Dreskin converses with guest artists—including School of Art faculty Harry Gamboa Jr. and alumni Todd Gray (Art BFA 79, MFA 89) and Nicole Miller (Art BFA 05)—about photographic notions of “postmodern” imagery popularized in American throughout the ’70s and ’80s, and how ensuing narratives have impacted the artists’ individual practices.

Transmutations of the Clock | Sunday, Feb. 2, 3 pm
The panel discusses the ways in which artists “approach time as a site of critical engagement.” Participants include School of Art faculty Michael Ned Holte and alumni Beatriz Cortez (Art MFA 15) and Carter Mull (Art MFA 06), who organized Photo L.A.’s programming.

Mull, an artist and curator, also moderates the panel discussion “The Voice of an Institution” on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 3 pm, an investigation into the ways in which a “voice” can be used to unpack an otherwise mute assembly of works.
