Summaeverythang Community Center, founded last year by artist and CalArts alum Lauren Halsey (Art BFA 12), is based in South Los Angeles and dedicated to “the empowerment and transcendence of black and brown folks socio-politically and economically, intellectually and artistically.”
Amid the recent protests against police brutality and the murder of George Floyd, Summaeverythang has packed and distributed hundreds of boxes of fresh, organic produce free of charge to residents of South LA and Watts.
To coincide with what would have been the opening of Halsey’s online solo exhibition with David Kordansky Gallery this week, the gallery has pledged to match up to $10,000 in donations from its audience and patrons for the next week to support Summaeverythang’s food distribution project. The donations must be made by Wednesday, June 10, 8 am PDT. From the gallery’s press release:
We at David Kordansky Gallery stand in solidarity with Black Lives Matter and all those protesting police brutality and racial injustice. We are committed to supporting projects by our artists that actively seek creative ways to combat systemic racism by building coalitions of love and support. Halsey’s Summaeverythang Community Center provides an inspiring example of how each of us can effect change by directly reaching out to the people around us.

The viewing of Halsey’s exhibition of hand-carved gypsum wall works, which are part of an ongoing project to create a permanent, multiuse structure in South LA., has been postponed on DavidKordanskyGallery.com as well as GalleryPlatform.LA.
