Online Panel Examines ‘hyper(in)visibility’ Among Asian Women Artists

Multidisciplinary artist and recent CalArts graduate stephanie mei huang (Art MFA 20) has organized an online panel discussion with six Asian women artists to discuss how the “yellow woman’s body, historically rendered either invisible or as ‘object,’ is now catapulted into hypervisibility amidst xenophobic questions of contagion, virility, and a history of scapegoatism.” 

The discussion with artists Pearl C. Hsiung (CalArts adjunct faculty), Maia Ruth Lee, Astria Suparak, Stephanie Syjuco, Hồng-Ân Trương, and Christine Tien Wang, is being held in partnership with Contemporary Calgary and the Vancouver Art Gallery and in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and others denouncing systems of oppression, racism, and police brutality.

Recent global uprisings as well as the coronavirus pandemic have further revealed pre-existing dysfunction within many societal systems, including issues of inequality with race, gender, and class. The discussion will address these topics as well as the “racialized and gendered spectrum of visibility” moving through their art practices.

huang, whose own art practice is rooted in notions of nationhood, expansionist mythologies and racial melancholia, hosts the online discussion.
