The ‘Radical Practice’ series launched as part of the 24700 podcast.
CalArts’ 24700 podcast presents a new series that focuses on the Graphic Design Program’s alumnae. Radical Practice features conversations between current students and graduates of the program with distinct professional practices.
With members of the class serving as roundtable hosts, they discuss a number of topics with the alums, from their design practice to personal definitions of self and success.
In the inaugural episode, Graphic Design students Natalie Gooden (Art BFA 22), Alene Tashjian (Art BFA 22), Alex Meir (Art BFA 22), Usha Venkat (Art BFA 22), Zhenyu Qu (Art BFA 21), and Shuchin (Lily) Yeh (Art MFA 21) interview Kate Johnston (Art MFA 12), whose practice balances strategy, identity, service design, and art direction.
In 2013, Johnston co-founded The Women’s Center for Creative Work, an LA-based nonprofit organization whose mission is to cultivate LA’s feminist creative communities and practices. She currently serves as principal of Present Tense Studio.
Radical Practice evolved from CalArts faculty Louise Sandhaus’ Spring 2020 Symposium Workshop. Once the COVID-19 pandemic moved classes online, a planned symposium at REDCAT with the Graphic Design alums was scrapped. But the students shifted their efforts, moving the discussion online—and into the podcast format. Listen below.
