Drive-In Dance Concert by CalArts Faculty Jermaine Spivey and Spenser Theberge

‘The Betweens’ by CalArts School of Dance faculty Jermaine Spivey and Spenser Theberge runs Nov. 12-22 at LADP.

The Betweens by CalArts School of Dance faculty Jermaine Spivey and Spenser Theberge brings live dance back to Los Angeles. Commissioned by L.A. Dance Project (LADP), The Betweens is a drive-in dance experience performed in the space surrounding LADP’s downtown Los Angeles studios. The show kicked off last night (Thursday, Nov. 12), running through Sunday, Nov. 22.

Spivey’s and Thegerge’s work is centered on their investigation of the meanings behind and relationships between the words “placement,” “replacement,” and “displacement,” during the COVID-19 era. In the program notes the artists said, “This liminality has been at the heart of our process, and it leads us to this central question: How do you maintain a sense of self when you’re constantly placed, replaced, and displaced?”

The work is performed by Spivey and Theberge in collaboration with other dancers, including fellow CalArts faculty Yusha Marie-Sorzano. The original score was composed by Maxwell Transue, with sound design by Gahyae Ryu, and costumes by 69.

L.A. Dance Project is led by Artistic Director Benjamin Millepied along with Associate Artistic Director Sebastien Marcovici. LADP features 12 full-time dancers based in Los Angeles and rehearses and performs at its studio theater 2245 and presents at venues around the world.
