MACK Celebrates New Allan Sekula Book with Virtual Symposium

On Thursday, Jan. 14, London-based independent art and photography publishing house MACK virtually presents Art Isn’t Fair: An Allan Sekula Symposium, in partnership with the Centre for the Study of Contemporary Art in London. The event comes on the heels of the posthumous release of the former CalArts faculty’s book of essays Allan Sekula, Art Isn’t Fair: Further Essays on the Traffic in Photographs and Related Media

The symposium, featuring a panel discussion with School of Art faculty Billy Woodberry, will be held on the publisher’s digital platform MACK LIVE. About the symposium, per MACK:

To celebrate the launch of Allan Sekula, Art Isn’t Fair: Further Essays on the Traffic in Photographs and Related Media, join us for a deep dive into Sekula’s groundbreaking critical work between image, text, and video and its incisive commentary on art, politics, and capital. With Makeda Djata Best, David Campany, Chantal Pontbriand, Stephanie Schwartz, Billy Woodberry, and Sally Stein (chair).

The 344-page book itself takes its name from Sekula’s 2012 video work Art Isn’t Fair, a commentary on the emergence of art fairs “as yet another international gathering of moneyed elites.” The publication contains a multitude of textual, photographic, and film essays, as well as essays about late former School of Art faculty Michael Asher and current School of Film/Video faculty James Benning.

Art Isn’t Fair was edited by Stein, Sekula’s wife who took over his classes upon his passing, and Ina Steiner (Art MFA 03), one of Sekula’s former students.

Allan Sekula, Art Isn’t Fair: Further Essays on the Traffic in Photographs and Related Media is available at MACK Books.
