Fifth Annual Co-Incidence Festival Goes Virtual

The Co-Incidence Festival returns for 2021—with a twist. This year’s festival kicks off with a virtual four-day segment (Thursday, Jan. 14 to Sunday, Jan. 17), followed by an in-person, second half anticipated for summer 2021 (dates TBD). 

Seeking to expand the definitions of art, music, and the traditional concert format, Aaron Foster Breilyn (Music MFA 13) and Luke Martin (Music MFA 16) co-founded the festival 2017 to unite the experimental music community through collaboration, discussion, workshops, and performances. This virtual edition also includes games, rehearsals, and casual hangouts. From the official festival website: 

This year at co-incidence, joined by resident artist Nina Power, we will interrogate this idea of groups, of we’s. During our time together at the festival, what mirrors can we hold to ourselves that don’t just show us? What might this world beyond look like and how can we experiment toward it; how can we begin to listen to that which is radically unhearable?

Joining the virtual lineup is CalArtian violinist and composer Cassia Streb (Music MFA 06), who will introduce and discuss an ongoing piece based on her previous work The Mueller Tunnel, “focusing on topics of memory, and change.” All January events will be hosted on Discord. Co-Incidence Festival is hosted by Non-Event, a Boston-based concert series devoted to the presentation of experimental, abstract and improvised music from New England and around the world.
