Contemporary art gallery ROSEGALLERY in Santa Monica, Calif. presents Into the Blue, a new group exhibition featuring works by School of Art faculty Jo Ann Callis and School of Film/Video faculty Maureen Selwood with her daughter Megan Cotts (Art MFA 09). The gallery holds an opening in-person reception on Saturday, May 22 from 2-6 pm PST.
In response to the uncertainty of the past year, Into the Blue’s participating artists explore newly emerging opportunities for closeness and resetting by investigating the color blue’s many hues and histories. Beyond color, blue can be experienced as an emotion or state of being; just as one hue “hums in the distant horizon,” another “blankets the atmosphere at dusk.”
ROSEGALLERY further notes the significance of the color blue and how it uniquely manifests in the artists’ exhibition works:
The first synthetically created blue pigment appeared in ancient Egypt, a ground and heated mix of limestone and azurite. Since then, artists have found countless ways to express emotion through the color blue. This grouping of artists presents the ubiquity and variety of the color blue through its many manifestations. Some associations are linked through hues, some through temperament, but together, these works provide a sense of interconnection.
The Into the Blue exhibition is free and open to the public.
