The nominees for the 73rd Emmy Awards were unveiled this morning, via livestream on the Emmys’ website. The announcement was made by actor and CalArts Theater faculty Ron Cephas Jones and his daughter, Jasmine Cephas Jones. As in previous years, CalArtians are well-represented in numerous categories, including Acting, Lighting Design, Sound Editing, Production Design, and Animation.
Award-winning actor and CalArts Trustee Don Cheadle (Theater BFA 86) has been nominated for Best Guest Actor in a Drama Series for Falcon and The Winter Soldier. Also picking up a nomination in an acting category is Cecily Strong (Theater BFA 06), nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her work on the long-running Saturday Night Live.
CalArtian Genndy Tartakovsky‘s (Film/Video 92) show Primal received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Animated Program.
Art director Gloria Lamb (Theater BFA 06) is part of the team nominated for Outstanding Production Design for a Variety Special for their work on the 63rd Grammy Awards Telecast for CBS. This is Lamb’s seventh Emmy nomination; she won the Emmy in 2016 for her work on the Oscars telecast.
Lighting director Nathan Files (Theater BFA 14) was nominated for Outstanding Lighting Design/Lighting Direction For A Variety Series for Dancing With The Stars (ABC, BBC Studios)
Lighting director Nathan Files (Theater BFA 14) was nominated for Outstanding Lighting Design/Lighting Direction For A Variety Series for Dancing With The Stars. In the same category, lighting directors Daniel K. Boland (Theater BFA 95) and Andrew Munie (Theater BFA 12) were nominated for their work on The Voice (NBC).
Executive Producer Casey Kriley (Film/Video MFA 97) earned three Emmy nominations in two categories this year. In the Outstanding Short Form Nonfiction Or Reality Series, she was part of the producing team for Top Chef: Last Chance Kitchen; in the Outstanding Competition Program, she earned nominations for Nailed It and Bravo’s Top Chef. Also part of the Top Chef‘s team is Emmy nominee Wade Sheeler (Film/Video MFA 97).
CalArts alum Kirby Dick (Art BFA 76) and Amy Ziering received two nominations for their documentary Allen v. Farrow for Outstanding Directing For A Documentary/Nonfiction Program, and also Outstanding Writing For A Nonfiction Program. Sound editor Dane A. Davis (Film/Video BFA 81) received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Sound Editing For A Nonfiction Or Reality Program for his work on Allen v. Farrow.
In the Outstanding Structured Reality Program category, Executive Producer Bengt Anderson (Theater BFA 00) was nominated for his work on National Geographic’s Running Wild With Bear Grylls.
Foley artist Elizabeth Rainey (Theater BFA 90) was nominated for Outstanding Sound Editing For A Comedy Or Drama Series (Half-Hour) and Animation for the Apple TV+ show Mythic Quest.
CalArts alum Hal Hickel (Film/Video 83) receivied an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Special Visual Effects In A Season Or A Movie for the Disney+ series The Mandalorian.
The 73rd Emmy Awards will be broadcast live Sunday, Sept. 19 at 8 pm ET/5 pm PT on CBS and Paramount+.
