The Wild Beast Concert Series opens Saturday, Oct. 23.
CalArts kicks off the inaugural season of The Wild Beast Concert Series, presented by Levitt Pavilions, tomorrow night (Oct. 23) on the Institute’s Valencia campus.
Music faculty member Mark Menzies directs the classical music concert that will feature works by Strauss, Mozart, Gabrieli and Dvorák performed by an orchestra comprised of students, faculty and alumni of The Herb Alpert School of Music at CalArts.
On the program:
- Andrea Gabrieli (1533–1586): Battaglia (1586)
- Giovanni Gabrieli (1553–1612): Sonata pian e forte
- Giovanni Gabrieli (1553–1612): Sonata for 3 Violins
- Richard Strauss (1864–1949): Serenade op. 7 (1882)
- Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791): Serenade in Eb Major, K. 375 (1781)
- Antonin Dvorák (1841–1904): Serenade op. 44 (1878)
The new music series builds on the momentum of The Wild Beast’s public opening in May that featured a slate of world music and dance performances. As in the opening, the concert features open seating with limited benches (first-come, first-served) and lawn seating available. The public is encouraged to bring chairs, blankets and picnics. The program will be held rain or shine. In case of inclement weather, the concert will held in the Institute’s Main Gallery.
The Wild Beast Concert Series continues on Nov. 7 with the West Coast premiere of Iannis Xenakis’ Oresteia, which is being presented in conjunction with the opening of MOCA’s exhibition of the work of pioneering musician and architect Iannis Xenakis.
