On Wednesday, Nov. 3, School of Dance faculty Ernest Baker discusses privilege, power dynamics, and his creative consultancy for an episode of Explained at REDCAT in downtown Los Angeles.
Launched in 2018, Explained is a Netflix series that offers episodic deep-dives into various topics, ranging from extraterrestrial life to cryptocurrency to country music. Baker worked on an episode titled “Dance Crazes,” which premiered Sept. 24 as part of the series’ third season. Watch the third season trailer below.
The “Dance Crazes” episode tagline:
From the waltz to voguing, dance crazes have connected people throughout history. But when a dance catches on, who gets the credit – and compensation?
Baker, who is the first and only US Presidential Scholar in the Arts in Hip Hop Dance named by the White House, collaborated with Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Ora DeKornfeld on the Netflix series as a creative consultant and choreographer.
The free discussion at REDCAT features Baker, DeKornfeld, and School of Dance faculty Cristina Benedetti, and will be moderated by Interim Dean of The Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance Rosanna Gamson.
