Son of Semele Ensemble’s (SOSE) SOSEhost initiative and A Collection of Shiny Objects, a new theater venture from producer and CalArts alumna Elizabeth R. English (Theater MFA 10) present the developmental workshop of Jennifer Barclay’s The Exile of Petie DeLarge on Friday.

Directed by Maureen Huskey (Theater MFA 09), the workshop is a collaborative experiment in language, performance and music. The show organizers describe Exile as “telling a story of youthful rebellion, lost innocence and dark moral questions, the text is inspired by three iconic novels, Peter Pan, The Lord of the Flies and A Clockwork Orange.” The play integrates both live sound and recorded music, choreographed movement, masks and “puppeted objects.”

The “play-with-music” features a number of CalArtians on stage and in roles behind-the-scenes. Petie DeLarge, the expelled leader of a campus coup, is played by Erica Bitton (Theater BFA 10), and her small band of renegade students battle their adult oppressors, personified by their professors. Joining Bitton in the cast are fellow CalArtians Julian Evens  (Theater BFA 10), Alexandra Kustin (Theater BFA 11), Liam Springthorpe (Theater BFA 08) and Anne Yatco (Theater MFA 09).

The Exile of Petie DeLarge also features a CalArts-based production and management team: Production Designer Kit Stolen (Theater MFA 09), Sound Designer Martin Gimenez (Theater MFA 09), Lighting Designer Bryan Yu (Theater BFA11), Stage Manager Lisa Maydwell (Theater MFA 12) and Production Manager Cameron Squire (Theater MFA 11).

The production has also been invited to be a part of this year’s REDCAT/NOW Festival in July. We were able to take photos at a rehearsal at CalArts last week. They’re now posted above.
