From Blimp to Brass: Lunchtime Concerts at CalArts

Noontime concerts are a staple at CalArts, and you never know quite what to expect. Last week, lunch goers were treated to two wildly diverse musical styles at the same time.

Outside The Herb Alpert School of Music at CalArts, the trio Fire Blimp, with Paul Fraser (Music MFA 11) on keys, and Michael Lockwood (Music MFA 11) and Timothy Carr (Music BFA 11) on drums and keys, improvised a set of experimental textures and polyrhythmic jams.

Inside the Main Gallery, CalArts New Millennium Brass, op. 10 no 2, directed by faculty members Edward Carroll and James Miller, and conducted by Ryan Bancroft (Music BFA 11), tackled the more familiar sounds of Leonard Bernstein. The ensemble played excerpts from West Side Story.

We’ve cut a short video together of the two performances (posted above).
