CalArtians are presenting new works and curating exhibitions in and around Los Angeles this month. Here’s a quick roundup:

If / And / Or: Sept. 1–30

Alumni Gilda Davidian (Art BFA 06) and Stefani Greenwood (Art BFA 07) present an exhibition at the New Media Gallery in Ventura this month.

From the gallery’s press release: “For this exhibition, we selected phrases from a variety of sources on subjects such as time, space, color, and distance and proceeded to make images based on those sentences.”

The Frostig Collection: September-December

Beginning this month and running through January, The Frostig Collection is hosting a new rotating art exhibition in its temporary home at Bergamot Station in Santa Monica. Curated by Kate Stern (Theater 81), The Frostig Collection features works from well known artists such as Lita Albuquerque, Larry Bell and R. Kenton Nelson. The collection, which is comprised predominantly of sculpture, raises money for social skills programs for children with learning disabilities, Asperger’s and high-functioning autism.

Painter’s Forms: Sept. 17 – Oct. 22

This Saturday, Painter’s Form by Brett Cody Rogers (Art MFA 04), opens at Pepin Moore in Los Angeles.

From Pepin Moore:

The title of the exhibition, Painter’s Forms, references Philip Guston’s 1972 oil painting of the same title, a painting created during Guston’s departure into figurative abstraction that pulls its imagery from materials in and around the studio. Using the materials of painting and painting itself as a subject, Rogers fluidly interlaces painting with photography and film.

Gary Schwartz (MFA ’81) is screening a new animated short at the Ottawa International Animation Festival on September 25th. The film makes inquiry into the unanswerable question, “what is the definition of animation?”
