Beginning Thursday (Dec. 8), The Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance at CalArts presents the 2011 Winter Dance Concert. The performances run through Saturday (Dec. 10) at the Walt Disney Modular Theater at CalArts and at REDCAT on Dec. 16-17.

This year’s program features two pieces by Israeli choreographer Ohad Naharin, known for his work as artistic director of the famed Batsheva Dance Company in Tel Aviv. His work is known for its “inventive, supremely textured movement vocabulary.”

More from REDCAT:

Having rehearsed under Batsheva veteran Danielle Agami, CalArts’ dancers perform excerpts of Naharin’s signature ensemble pieces: Echad Mi Yodea, set to a driving rock version of the Passover song of the same name, from Kyr (1990)—the choreographer’s first dance for Batsheva; and Humus, from Three (2005).

Agami, an artist-in-residence at CalArts this semester, has taught Gaga, Naharin’s movement language since 2003 to both professional dancers and students without prior dance experience.

The Winter Dance program also includes premieres by two faculty choreographers: Colin Connor’s The Sea, the Sea, and Stephanie Nugent’s latest piece, Yes Is Not Passive.
