‘Beautiful/Decay’ Video Interview with Artist, Animator Allison Schulnik

Artist and CalArts alumna Allison Schulnik (Film/Video BFA 00) recently opened her studio to the online art magazine Beautiful/Decay, providing a glimpse into her world of sad hobo clowns and her painting and animation process. In the video above, Schulnik discusses how her paintings inform her animations (and vice versa), the artists in her family and how Los Angeles is the perfect place for giving artists quiet time in the studio, while still fostering a vibrant arts community.

From February through May 2013, Schulnik’s work will be featured in the contemporary art program ex·pose at the Laguna Art Museum. Earlier this summer, the museum inaugurated the program with the first solo exhibition of work by CalArtian artist Peter Bo Rappmund (Film/Video MFA 10).

Read more about Schulnik in the recent Spring/Summer edition of CalArts Magazine and the 24700 interview from 2010.

Below is her 2011 animation, Mound, which features cinematography by Helder K. Sun (Film/Video BFA 99, MFA 00), and is set to a track It’s Raining Today by Noel Scott Engel.

Just watched the interview with Allison Schulnik and Mound
There was something very poignant about the interplay of interview and animation; especially the 3 dancers with music soundtrack
