CalArtians Take Home Annie Awards

'Tis the season for trophies in Los Angeles–and earlier this month (Feb. 3), the 45th Annie Awards presented a number of CalArtians with awards for their achievements in animation.

The night’s biggest winner, Pixar’s Coco, co-directed by Lee Unkrich and CalArts alum Adrian Molina (Film/Video BFA 06), took home 11 awards, including Best Animated Feature. Among the nominees in the Best Animated Feature category were two films also helmed by CalArtians: Illumination's Despicable Me 3, co-directed by Kyle Balda (Film/Video 93), and Boss Baby from DreamWorks Animation, directed by Tom McGrath (Film/Video BFA 90).

Below is a list of the CalArtian Annie Award winners:

    • Best Animated Feature: Coco, Pixar Animation Studios; directed by Lee Unkrich, co-directed by Adrian Molina (Film/Video BFA 06);
    • Best Animated Short Project: Dear Basketball, Glen Keane Productions, Kobe Studios, Believe Entertainment Group; Glen Keane (Film/Video 74);
    • Best Animated Television/Broadcast Commercial: June, Broad Reach Pictures/Chromosphere/Lyft; design by Jasmin Lai (Film/Video 10), Tiffany Ford (Film/Video 10); animation by Nelson Boles (Film/Video BFA 12), Vitality Strokous (Film/Video BFA 13); CG by Theresa Latzko (Film/Video BFA 14);
    • Best Animated Television/Broadcast Production for Children We Bare Bears, Episode: "Panda's Art," Cartoon Network Animation Studios; created by Daniel Chong (Film/Video 04);
    • Directing in an Animated Television / Broadcast Production: Disney Mickey Mouse/ Episode: "The Scariest Story Ever: A Mickey Mouse Halloween Spooktacular!"; directed by Alonso Ramirez-Ramos (Film/Video BFA 10);
    • Directing in an Animated Feature Production: Coco, directed by Lee Unkrich, co-directed by Adrian Molina (Film/Video BFA 06);
    • Music in an Animated Feature Production: Coco, lyrics by Adrian Molina (Film/Video BFA 06);
    • Production Design in an Animated Feature Production: Coco, Nathaniel McLaughlin (Film/Video BFA 96)
    • Storyboarding in an Animated Feature Production: Coco, Madeline Sharafian (Film/Video 14)
    • Writing in an Animated Feature Production: Coco, Writer: Adrian Molina (Film/Video BFA 06).
