John King’s Dice Thrown at CalArts this Weekend

Dice Thrown

'Dice Thrown,' an opera by John King, is based on a Mallarmé poem.

John King’s Dice Thrown begins its two-day run at CalArts tomorrow (April 23-24). Based on the visual poem “Un coup de dés jamais n’abolira le hasard” by Stéphane Mallarmé, the opera translates to an auditory and visual experience on stage.

The work showcases the collaborative efforts among CalArts alumnus King (Music BFA 76) and numerous members of the faculty and students of the The Herb Alpert School of Music at CalArts, the School of Theater and The Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance.

The video excerpt below provides just a glimpse into the lights, costumes, singing and movement involved in this opera of chance. (Thanks to Stephan Koplowitz, Dean of The Sharon Disney Lund school of Dance, for the footage.)
