CalArts Music Faculty Take REDCAT Stage This Week

This week, two faculty members of The Herb Alpert School of Music at CalArts take the stage at REDCAT for can’t-miss musical performances.

On Wednesday (April 9), multi-instrumentalist Vinny Golia leads his Large Ensemble in the world premieres of demanding, ambitiously scaled original compositions. Now numbering more than 40 performers, the ensemble’s newest incarnation is built around the Vinny Golia Electric Sextet, with Golia on numerous wind instruments, Daniel Rosenboom (Music MFA 07) on trumpet, Gavin Templeton (Music MFA 08) on saxophone, Alex Noice (Music MFA 08) on guitar, Jon Armstrong (Music MFA 08) on bass, Andrew Lessman (Music BFA 09) on drums, and for the very first time, a vocalist in Andrea Young (Music DMA 14).

The weekend (April 12-13) brings Portrait Concerts, two different programs of operas, concert theater pieces and instrumental compositions augmented by electronics and video by composer Anne LeBaron. Saturday’s program includes Breathtails, a song cycle in 13 breaths, while Sunday’s includes selections from her hyperopera Crescent City. Audience members will also hear a sneak preview of LeBaron’s newest opera, Psyche & Delia, a composition that probes the cultural resonance of LSD. This new work recently earned the composer an Opera Grants for Female Composers, one of eight awards presented nationally by Opera America.
