The Herb Alpert School of Music at CalArts Unveils WaveCave Gallery

This fall, The Herb Alpert School of Music at CalArts opens the The WaveCave Gallery—a venue dedicated for music students to develop and exhibit new works. Located beside the Roy O. Disney Concert Hall (ROD), the space will allow artists to create interactive sound installations, video installations, interactive workshops, listening sessions and all forms of sound art and sculpture.

During the Fall 2014 semester, the WaveCave will be populated primarily with works by Experimental Sound Practices Program (ESP) alumni and current CalArts faculty. Later in the Fall semester, faculty members Clay Chaplin and Sara Roberts will have an open call for any current CalArts music students to submit proposals for projects in the space in the Spring 2015 semester.

“When making sound, video and other installations, it can be really helpful to have a space where you can actually work on the piece and develop it,” says Chaplin via email. “So, if students are currently working on a project that requires space, we will do our best to carve out some room on the calendar for such practices.”

The current installation schedule for the WaveCave:

  • Sept. 1-9 – Clay Chaplin (Faculty)
  • Sept. 10-21 – Cooper Baker (Music MFA 06 BFA 04)
  • Sept. 22-28 – Liew Niyomkarn (Music MFA 14)
  • Sept. 29-Oct. 12 – Mark Trayle (Faculty)
  • Oct. 14-26 – Scott Cazan (Music MFA 09)
  • Oct. 27-Nov. 9 – Stephanie Smith (Music MFA 11)
  • Nov. 10-21 – Marc Nimoy (Music MFA 07)

CalArts will celebrate the opening of the WaveCave on Oct. 3 at 7 pm in the space and the ROD lobby. The event will then move to the ROD for a concert of experimental sound works performed by ESP alumni composers and artists, including Casey Anderson (Music MFA 09), Baker, Ezra Buchla (Music MFA 04), Cazan, Daniel Eaton (Music MFA 11), Todd Lerew (Music MFA 14) and Smith.
