Charmingly Creepy Illustrations in Fran Krause’s Deep Dark Fears

From the ‘Deep Dark Fears’ Tumblr page.

Tonight (Sept. 29), Skylight Books (located in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles) hosts the release of Deep Dark Fears, a collection of 100 illustrated “deep dark fears” by CalArts Character Animation faculty Fran Krause.

Deep Dark Fears started as a Tumblr page in 2011. Krause asked readers to tell him about their fears, no matter how odd or implausible, and he would illustrate them and post them on his site. The book features comics from the page, plus more than 50 unpublished ones.

From the Facebook event page:

We all have weird fears, from getting sliced to ribbons in a subway station revolving gate to getting turned around by the wind while swimming and going too far out to sea. Animator, illustrator, and cartoonist Fran Krause brings these fears to life in vividly illustrated comics based on real fears submitted by readers (plus a few of his own). These “deep dark fears” run the gamut from unlikely but plausible to completely ridiculous, highlighting both our deeply human similarities and our peculiar uniquenesses that bring fear (and delight).

“Krause’s book confirms your worst fears, reminds you of fears you forgot you had and gives you lots of new ones about things you hadn’t even thought of yet,” says Jon Klassen, author and illustrator of I Want My Hat Back.
